When the sump pump runs nonstop

PlumbWorks GTA TeamOct 29, 20255 min read

After heavy rain, a sump pump can run almost constantly. That can be normal, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and newer basements with tight drainage. The red flag is when it runs nonstop on dry days or short-cycles every few minutes.

Check the float first. If it is stuck on the side of the pit or tangled in the cord, the pump will never shut off. Next, look outside at the discharge line. In winter, that line can freeze, and the pump keeps trying to push water out.

If the pit is clean and the discharge is clear but the pump still runs hard, it may be undersized or worn out. It is better to replace it early than to wait for the night it quits.
