Water heater noises: pops, sizzles, and when to worry
A soft crackle or pop from the tank is usually sediment. Minerals settle at the bottom, heat cycles, and you hear little bursts. It is common in the GTA because of our water hardness. The fix is a yearly flush. It takes about 20 minutes and keeps the heater efficient.
A sharp bang or hammering sound is different. That can mean the tank is overheating, the relief valve is working too hard, or the burner is cycling unevenly. If you see rusty water or smell sulfur, do not wait. That is a sign the tank is breaking down.
If you are unsure, listen for a pattern. Does it happen only after long showers? Does the pressure spike? A quick service visit can confirm what is normal and what is not, and it is cheaper than a replacement you did not plan for.
